Police Investigating Sunway Lagoon Roller Coaster Incident for Possible Negligence or Sabotage

SHAH ALAM, Aug 27 — Police are conducting a detailed investigation into a roller coaster accident at the Sunway Lagoon Theme Park last Saturday to determine whether the incident involved elements of negligence or sabotage.

Selangor Police Chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar stated that the investigation is being carried out in collaboration with technical experts from several agencies, including the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) and the Selangor Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH).

Speaking at a press conference at the Selangor Contingent Police Headquarters today, Shazeli confirmed that authorities have held discussions with the relevant technical agencies to cross-check findings and determine the precise cause of the accident.

“A thorough investigation is ongoing to complete the relevant information, and police are not disregarding any new leads that emerge throughout the investigation process,” Shazeli said.

Shazeli updated that two victims remain hospitalized receiving treatment, though neither sustained serious injuries, while all other affected individuals have either been discharged or treated as outpatients. Subang Jaya Police Chief ACP Wan Azlan Wan Mamat previously reported on Monday that 10 individuals suffered minor injuries when the incident occurred at around 9:00 pm last Saturday.

As part of follow-up procedures at the site, operation of the roller coaster ride has been temporarily suspended to allow investigative teams to perform detailed structural and technical inspections of the physical ride and its control room. Police have also recorded statements from several witnesses, including theme park operations personnel, ride attendants, and victims, to assist in the probe.
