KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 6 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed personal disagreement with UMNO’s decision to settle the RM50 million fine on behalf of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, cautioning that friendship must not obscure firm principles against corruption and abuse of power.
Speaking to reporters after performing Friday prayers at Masjid Taman Kosas in Kuala Lumpur on Friday, November 6, 2026, Anwar emphasized that while personal ties with Najib exist, public perception regarding integrity must be safeguarded.
“Personally, I disagree. While we have a sense of friendship with Datuk Seri Najib, it must not give the public the impression that corruption involving billions of ringgit can simply be overlooked. What values are we teaching our children? We must uphold firm moral principles that reject abuse of power and corruption,” Anwar stated.
However, the Prime Minister acknowledged that the payment was UMNO’s prerogative, reiterating that the Unity Government respects legal procedures and the constitutional prerogatives exercised by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia.
The Prime Minister’s remarks followed an earlier announcement by UMNO Secretary-General Datuk Dr. Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki that the party completed all payment procedures for Najib’s RM50 million fine at the Kuala Lumpur High Court criminal registry on Friday morning. The payment was raised via the party’s special Najib Razak Solidarity Fund, which was launched on September 18, 2026, to collect public donations.
Najib’s special officer, Ahmad Lutfi Azhar, arrived at the court at 11:30 AM to finalize the administrative documentation.
The fine settlement fulfilled key conditions set under a royal pardon granted on September 18, 2026, allowing the 73-year-old former prime minister to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028. Najib had been serving his sentence at Kajang Prison since August 23, 2022, following his conviction over the misappropriation of RM42 million in SRC International Sdn Bhd funds.
