HYDERABAD, Oct 3 – Pakistan will export an additional 70,000 tonnes of rice to Malaysia between October and December 2026, following targeted diplomatic and commercial initiatives driven by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
In an official statement released on Friday, October 2, 2026, the Pakistan Prime Minister’s Office described the new export agreement as a major boost for the country’s agricultural sector.
“Securing the additional export of 70,000 metric tonnes of Pakistani rice is the result of effective diplomatic and commercial efforts on the directives of the prime minister,” the statement read.
Prime Minister Shehbaz emphasized that expanding international market access for Pakistani agricultural commodities remains a core priority for his administration.
Trade Delegation Engagements in Kuala Lumpur
Pakistan, a primary global producer of extra-long grain aromatic basmati rice, has earmarked Malaysia as a vital growth destination for agricultural commodities.
The export agreement follows high-level bilateral discussions conducted during the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) in Kuala Lumpur. Key trade engagement details include:
- Delegation Composition: The Pakistani trade delegation was led by Ministry of National Food Security Secretary Amer Ali Ahmed, Ministry of Commerce Secretary Jawad Paul, and leadership representatives from the Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP).
- Bilateral Meetings: Pakistani officials and industry delegates met with senior executives from Padiberas Nasional Berhad (BERNAS) to finalize terms for the supplementary rice shipments.
- Broader Commodity Expansion: Alongside staple grains, Pakistan is actively working with Malaysian authorities to expand its footprint in halal meat exports.
