KOTA TINGGI, Sept 22 – A 37-year-old man accused of killing his five-year-old niece by throwing her into a river in Kampung Padang, Tanjung Sedili, has been remanded for seven days.
Sessions Court Judge Hafizah Abdul Rajak issued the remand order, which runs until Sept 28, to facilitate investigations under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
The suspect, who had been receiving medical treatment at Kota Tinggi Hospital, arrived at the court complex around 9:00 AM under police escort.
The young girl’s body was recovered from the river on Monday morning. Kota Tinggi district police chief Supt Yusof Othman stated that the suspect allegedly threw the child into the water before going on an armed rampage, chasing a 40-year-old man with a machete.
Following an emergency report received at approximately 9:30 AM, responding officers engaged in a struggle with the suspect, resulting in an injury to one policeman before the suspect was successfully subdued and arrested.
Police believe the suspect suffers from mental health problems.
