IPOH, Sept 30 – Police arrested a 52-year-old local man and confiscated 102 cartons of suspected untaxed cigarettes during an operation at Jalan Sungkai, Taman Aman near Bidor on Monday, September 28.
Perak Police Chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin stated that a team from the General Operations Force (GOF) 3rd Battalion intercepted the suspect at approximately 8:15 PM after observing a white Proton Iswara being driven in a suspicious manner.
A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered 102 cartons of illicit cigarettes across various brands. Officers also seized the Proton Iswara used in the operation, with the total value of the seized contraband currently under assessment.
According to preliminary interrogations, the suspect admitted to possessing and selling smuggled cigarettes over the past three years.
“The suspect claimed that he received a weekly supply from a local man before distributing the cigarettes to small-scale traders in the surrounding area,” Mohd Alwi said in an official statement released on Wednesday.
The suspect has been remanded for four days beginning Tuesday, September 29, to facilitate ongoing investigations under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
Seized cigarette samples will be dispatched to the Department of Chemistry Malaysia for formal analysis while authorities trace the supply source and broader distribution network.
