PUTRAJAYA, Aug 12 — Malaysia and Australia are actively exploring strategic cooperation in the rare earth elements (REE) and critical minerals sectors, with a major focus on establishing domestic neodymium magnet manufacturing capabilities.
The Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry (NRES) stated that the initiative was among the central topics discussed during a bilateral meeting between Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup and Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia Danielle Heinecke at the Parliament building yesterday.
In line with the National Mineral Policy 3 (NMP3), Malaysia is seeking to leverage Australia’s technical leadership and expertise in critical minerals to build a comprehensive domestic REE value chain extending from midstream processing to downstream industrial applications.
“The discussions also focused on the exchange of best practices in managing rare earth processing residues, particularly neutralisation underflow residue (NUF), as well as efforts to develop domestic neodymium magnet manufacturing capabilities,” NRES said in an official statement today.
Beyond critical minerals and rare earths, the high-level meeting covered broader environmental governance topics, including hazardous waste management, marine ecosystem conservation, climate financing, and Malaysia’s commitments ahead of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP31).
The ministry noted that combining Australia’s technical proficiency with Malaysia’s commitment to sustainable resource stewardship will act as a catalyst for competitive green economic growth, delivering long-term economic and environmental advantages for both nations.
The bilateral engagement forms part of ongoing efforts to deepen diplomatic and economic ties under the framework of the Malaysia-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP), which was formally established in 2021.
