KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 8 – Bursa Malaysia opened slightly higher on Thursday morning but quickly reversed course to trade lower, tracking overnight losses on Wall Street as rising US Treasury yields continued to weigh on broader market sentiment.
At 9:34 AM on October 8, 2026, the benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) shed 10.55 points, or 0.65 per cent, dropping to 1,601.23 from Wednesday’s close of 1,611.78.
The index had initially opened 1.67 points higher at 1,613.45 before selling pressure emerged across major financial and technology counters.
Market Breadth and Early Trading Volumes
Market breadth remained negative during early morning trading:
- Decliners vs Gainers: Losers outpaced gainers 466 to 197, with 337 counters remaining unchanged, 1,828 untraded, and 13 suspended.
- Volume and Turnover: Total market volume reached 565.70 million units valued at RM370.21 million.
Heavyweights and Active Stocks
Major banking and industrial stocks exerted downward pressure on the composite index, though select utility and property counters found buying support:
- Heavyweight Movements: Banking counters saw declines, with CIMB dropping 13 sen to RM7.20, Public Bank sliding five sen to RM4.54, and Maybank dropping four sen to RM9.83. IHH Healthcare eased four sen to RM7.86, while Tenaga Nasional bucked the trend by gaining six sen to RM12.92.
- Active Trading Counters: NationGate jumped nine sen to RM1.95 and Top Glove gained two sen to 87.5 sen. Ni Hsin and V.S Industry inched up half a sen each to 40 sen and 33 sen, respectively, while Zetrix AI traded flat at eight sen.
- Top Gainers: Binastra Corporation led early gainers, surging 20 sen to RM2.70. IOI Properties Group and Fraser & Neave advanced 12 sen each to RM3.42 and RM20.90, respectively, followed by Malayan Cement (up eight sen to RM5.69) and KSL (up seven sen to RM2.64).
- Top Decliners: Technology and manufacturing heavyweights led losses, with Malaysian Pacific Industries dropping 90 sen to RM44.30, Hong Leong Bank shedding 44 sen to RM21.06, Mi Technovation declining 30 sen to RM6.08, Vitrox Corporation slipping 22 sen to RM11.00, and Dutch Lady Milk Industries losing 20 sen to RM29.50.
Indices and Sector Performance
All major sector indices traded lower during early morning hours:
- Financial Services Index: Dropped 203.87 points to 18,359.45.
- Plantation Index: Declined 26.92 points to 8,949.12.
- Energy Index: Slipped 1.72 points to 837.25.
