SEREMBAN, Aug 1 — Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN) are set to form the new Negeri Sembilan state government after securing a combined two-thirds majority in today’s 16th state election, according to unofficial results.
BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced at a press conference at Wisma UMNO Negeri Sembilan tonight that unofficial tallies show BN capturing 18 state assembly seats while PN won seven, giving the two coalitions a total of 25 seats in the 36-member legislature.
“We will have follow-up discussions between the two coalitions on the formation of the new state government based on the results announced,” Ahmad Zahid said.
Ahmad Zahid stated that the upcoming state administration will be built on a mutual understanding between BN and PN, emphasizing that the victory brings significant responsibility to establish a stable and credible leadership for the state.
“We humbly accept this mandate with gratitude and a sense of responsibility. The people’s trust is not a reason for us to become complacent or arrogant,” he added.
“Our task begins tonight. Insya-Allah, every pledge we made in our manifesto will be fulfilled for the benefit of the people and the state as a whole,” he promised.
When asked about an audience with the Yang Dipertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, Ahmad Zahid confirmed that official royal consent would be sought as soon as possible.
The press conference was attended by prominent coalition leaders, including BN deputy chairman Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Bersatu secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin, Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud, MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, and MIC deputy president Datuk Seri M. Saravanan.
A total of 103 candidates contested across 36 state assembly seats in today’s election.
Out of 859,760 registered voters, official Election Commission (EC) figures recorded a voter turnout of 65.38 percent—representing 562,133 voters—as of 4:00 pm today.
The political landscape marks a major shift from the 2023 state election, in which Pakatan Harapan (PH) won 17 seats, BN won 14, and PN won five.
