Baby dies on AirAsia flight to Perth

KUALA LUMPUR, April 22 – The Sydney Morning Herald reported that a two-month-old  baby died on an AirAsia X flight from Kuala Lumpur to Perth this morning.

The infant died after a “medical emergency” had been reported by the crew on AirAsia X flight D7236 to Perth Airport officials, prior to the arrival. The flight left KLIA2 in Sepang shortly after midnight.

News of the baby’s death was first reported on Perth Radio station Radio 6PR’s Breakfast programme, which said that AirAsia had issued a statement regarding a “medical emergency involving an infant” on board flight D7236.

“The safety and wellbeing of our guests is always our number one priority, and in accordance with procedure, the flight crew requested medical assistance on landing at Perth International Airport.

“Upon arrival, the aircraft was met by a team of medical specialists and the relevant authorities, including the Western Australia Police.

“We are unable to comment further on the infants’ medical situation, however our thoughts are with the infant and family involved,” an AirAsia spokeswoman told the programme.

Flight D7236 was scheduled to leave at 12.05am today, and arrive at 5.35am. According to FlightRadar.com, the actual departure time was 12.21am but the flight arrived in Perth Airport at about 5.22am.

Perth and Malaysia are in the same time zone.

The returning flight from Perth to Kuala Lumpur, which was scheduled to leave at 6.50am, has been delayed as a result.

“AirAsia apologises for any inconvenience caused and our thoughts are with the infant and family involved,” the spokeswoman told Radio 6PR.

According to WA Police, a report is being prepared for further investigation by the coroner.
