Teenager Charged With Murder Of 16-Year-Old Classmate In Yong Peng

Former UKM director charged abuse of power

BATU PAHAT, Oct 15 – A 16-year-old male student was charged in the Batu Pahat Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, October 15, 2026, with the murder of his female classmate at a secondary school in Yong Peng earlier this month.

No plea was recorded after the charge was read before Magistrate Mustaqim Sukarno, as murder cases fall under the exclusive jurisdiction of the High Court.

According to the charge sheet, the minor is accused of murdering 16-year-old Irene Sofiya Khairool Faisal inside Dewan Sri Tanjung at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Dato’ Seth in Yong Peng between 2:30 PM and 4:00 PM on October 3.

The charge was framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code (Act 574), which carries the death penalty or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years, along with a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutors Juanita Mohd Said and Firdaus Ruslan appeared for the prosecution, while the accused was represented by defense attorneys Muhd Azlan Shah Mohd Allias and Suhaila Shafi’uddin.

The court fixed December 22 for case mention at the Yong Peng Magistrate’s Court, pending the completion of forensic and post-mortem reports before transferring the case to the High Court.

Defense counsel and authorities provided further details regarding the court proceedings and background of the case:

  • In-Camera Proceedings: Defense lawyer Muhd Azlan Shah confirmed that the court proceedings were held in camera because the accused is a juvenile whose identity is protected under the Child Act 2001.
  • No Bail Allowed: Under Section 302 of the Penal Code, murder is a non-bailable offense, and the accused remains in police custody.
  • Discovered at School Hall: On October 3, Irene Sofiya was found unconscious and covered in blood inside the school hall at approximately 5:00 PM before being pronounced dead.
  • Remand Extension: The teenage suspect was initially remanded for six days on October 4, with his remand extended for an additional six days until Thursday to facilitate ongoing police investigations.
  • Motive Under Investigation: Police previously stated that resentment following unrequited romantic feelings was being investigated as a primary possible motive behind the killing.

Case management will resume on December 22 prior to formal trial proceedings in the High Court.
