Iran Offers Diplomatic Mediation Between Saudi Arabia And Houthis Amid Heightened Escalation

Iran offers mediation Saudi Arabia Houthis escalation

ISTANBUL, Oct 12 – Iran has offered to facilitate direct peace negotiations between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi movement following a sharp escalation in regional military conflict.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi extended the mediation offer during a telephone conversation with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, according to reports from Iran’s official IRNA news agency.

Expressing deep concern over escalating hostilties, Araghchi cautioned that persistent reliance on military force while sidelining diplomatic avenues would severely aggravate regional instability, emphasizing that “no military solution” exists for the ongoing crisis.

Diplomatic Offer, Regional Security Context, and Airport Attack Impact

The diplomatic outreach comes as regional transport routes and aviation hubs face unprecedented security disruptions:

  • Mediation Proposal: Araghchi stated that Iran remains prepared to supply “any possible assistance” to initiate structured dialogue between Saudi authorities and the Houthis to achieve a lasting political settlement.
  • Saudi Foreign Ministry Acknowledgment: The Saudi Foreign Ministry confirmed the phone call initiated by Araghchi, noting that both foreign ministers discussed recent regional escalations and ongoing management efforts.
  • Fatal Riyadh Airport Strike: The diplomatic initiative follows Saturday’s Houthi drone and missile strike on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, which left 13 people dead and 309 injured.
  • Coalition Retaliation Warning: The Saudi-led coalition backing Yemen’s internationally recognized government formally blamed the Houthis for the terminal strike and pledged a firm military response under international humanitarian law.
  • Maritime Disruptions via Strait of Hormuz: Regional tensions remain compounded by commercial shipping disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz stemming from vessel transit restrictions imposed by Iran in April following military conflicts involving the US, Israel, and Iran earlier in the year.

Diplomatic channels remain active as regional powers seek to prevent further military escalation across West Asia.
