AMMAN, Oct 12 – Palestinian official media has successfully conveyed the Palestinian narrative to international audiences despite strict social media restrictions, Israeli military operations, and heavy casualties among field reporters.
The General Supervisor of Palestinian Official Media, Minister Ahmad Assaf, delivered the assessment during the fourth edition of the Future of Media and Communication Forum held in Amman, Jordan.
Speaking at the primary session themed “A Changing World,” Assaf called for the establishment of independent Arab digital platforms to address global audiences in multiple languages and counter algorithmic bias.
Journalist Casualties, Platform Bias, and Arab Digital Initiatives
The forum highlighted the severe operational hazards facing media workers and called for unified Arab digital strategies:
- Journalist Casualties: Assaf reported that over 260 Palestinian journalists have been killed while carrying out their professional duties since October 7, 2023, with scores more suffering injuries or detention.
- Social Media Censorship: The minister criticized major social media platforms for suppressing Palestinian content and exhibiting narrative bias in favor of the occupation, violating international freedom of expression standards.
- Pan-Arab Platform Strategy: Assaf urged Arab nations to foster greater dialogue and consensus to construct dedicated digital platforms capable of broadcasting multi-lingual content to international audiences.
- Engagement & Accountability: The Palestinian media chief called for structured engagement with global tech companies to eliminate systemic content suppression and align digital moderation practices with international laws and UN resolutions.
The media forum in Amman brought together regional communication leaders to discuss strategic responses to rapidly shifting global media landscapes.
