PUTRAJAYA, Sept 15 — National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang has urged authorities to start investigation into the controversy surrounding a speech at the 2026 UMNO General Assembly that made Catholic priests and nuns the subject of a joke.

Aaron stated that a thorough investigation should be conducted to determine if any legal violations occurred, specifically citing Section 298 and Section 298A of the Penal Code (Act 574) as well as provisions under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588).

“Religion is not a laughing matter. Matters that are sacred and respected by a community should not be ridiculed, turned into sexual innuendo, or used solely to elicit laughter and applause,” Aaron said in a statement today.

He stressed that regardless of intent, jokes touching on religious institutions, figures, sacred texts, or beliefs must never be taken lightly. He warned that such remarks hurt religious followers and threaten the harmony established within Malaysia’s multi-religious and multi-cultural society.

Aaron emphasized that freedom of speech, political engagement, or humor does not grant anyone the liberty to violate the religious sensitivities of others, noting that this principle applies to all citizens regardless of status, race, or political affiliation.

Acknowledging the individual’s willingness to apologize, the minister expressed hope that the incident serves as a stern reminder for all leaders, speakers, and the wider public to exercise caution with their words. He added that respecting religious differences directly aligns with the fifth principle of the Rukun Negara—Kesopanan dan Kesusilaan (Courtesy and Morality)—which serves as a vital foundation for preserving peace and mutual respect across the nation.
