Nepal-China Border Flash Floods Death Toll Rises to 1,420 as Thousands Remain Missing

KATHMANDU, Sept 10 – The death toll from devastating flash floods and mudslides along the Nepal-China border has climbed to 1,420, while 5,649 people remain missing following widespread destruction across the mountainous frontier region. Emergency response teams across both countries continue search, rescue, and medical evacuation operations as the scale of the disaster unfolds.

According to the latest figures released Thursday by Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, confirmed fatalities within Nepal have risen to 1,377, with 5,130 individuals still unaccounted for. The disaster management agency updated that “13,656 people have been rescued, while 333 have received treatment at 19 hospitals and 256 have been discharged,” as medical personnel treat survivors brought in from devastated villages.

To tackle the immense logistics of the disaster, Nepal has mobilised more than 21,000 security personnel across affected zones, comprising 8,885 Nepal Army personnel, 7,975 police officers, and 4,203 members of the Armed Police Force. Air support has proven critical in reaching isolated mountain settlements, with the authority reporting that “Nepal Army helicopters had carried out 1,348 flights, while Armed Police Force helicopters had conducted another 272 flights in the affected areas.”

Across the border in China’s southwestern Xizang Autonomous Region, also known as Tibet, official reports state that the death toll remains at 43, with 519 people missing. Combined casualties from both nations bring the disaster’s total toll to 1,420 confirmed dead and 5,649 missing as rescue workers continue searching through tons of mud and waterlogged debris.
