SERDANG, Aug 29 — The Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture and Agrotourism Show (MAHA) 2026 marks a pivotal shift for the nation’s agricultural sector by prioritizing sustainability in the agrifood industry, according to Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu.
Speaking at the opening ceremony at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) today, Mohamad emphasized that adopting sustainable agricultural practices is vital to reducing carbon emissions and mitigating climate change while opening up broader market access for local produce.
MAHA 2026 showcases various eco-friendly innovations, including energy efficiency, systematic waste and food management, reduced usage of single-use plastics, regenerative agriculture, and recycling initiatives.
To strengthen national food security, Mohamad urged the public to revive the spirit of the Green Book Policy—introduced in 1974 by the late Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak—to curb reliance on food imports and ease cost-of-living pressures. He added that the government will continue modernizing the livestock and fisheries sectors through high-value aquaculture, agritech-driven animal feed production, and heightened biosecurity protocols.
Highlighting international participation from 14 countries, Mohamad stressed that bilateral cooperation agreements signed during the event must yield concrete outcomes.
“Firstly, we want to see these MoUs translate into more than just signed agreements. We also want to create opportunities to increase export sales and enable local entrepreneurs, particularly new businesses and agritech start-ups, to secure capital injections from local and international investors,” he said.
MAHA 2026 runs from Aug 28 to Sept 6 at MAEPS, hosting around 2,000 exhibitors and targeting over four million visitors. Also present were Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Chan Foong Hin and the ministry’s Secretary-General, Datuk Seri Isham Ishak.
