Wanted Suspect Shot Dead After Parang Attack on Police in Larut

LARUT, Aug 3 — A 39-year-old suspect wanted for a previous attack on police officers died on Sunday after being shot when he attempted to attack arresting officers with a parang at a fruit orchard hut in Kampung Klian Gunung Ijok, near Batu Kurau, Larut.

Perak Police Chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin confirmed the incident during a press conference at the Selama District Police Headquarters on Monday, stating that the suspect was believed to be involved in a June 23 incident that left two narcotics officers injured.

Acting on public intelligence, police tracked down the suspect, who worked as a labourer, to his hiding spot around 8:20 am on Sunday. When officers approached to execute the arrest, the suspect grabbed a parang and charged at them, posing an immediate threat to their safety.

In self-defence, police fired a shot at the suspect’s leg. Despite collapsing, the suspect continued to violently resist arrest, prompting a struggle before officers successfully disarmed and restrained him.

A medical team dispatched to the scene pronounced the suspect dead at approximately 9:20 am. His body was transferred to Taiping Hospital for a post-mortem, with results pending. Police records show the deceased had 10 previous criminal and drug-related offences.
