Melaka floods

MELAKA, July 11 — Heavy downpours have triggered flash floods across Melaka, forcing emergency services to activate three temporary relief centres (PPS) to accommodate displaced residents from 22 affected areas across the Melaka Tengah and Alor Gajah districts.

State Civil Defence Force (APM) Director Lt Col (PA) Kamarulsyah Muslim confirmed that the first emergency shelter was opened at the Malaysian Islamic Welfare Organisation (Perkim) hall in Masjid Tanah at 2:00 PM. The facility was established to shelter flood victims from three primary zones: Taman Masjid Tanah Ria, Jalan Bandar Baru Masjid Tanah, and Kampung Pulau Semut.

“So far, 15 people from five families have been placed at the Perkim Masjid Tanah relief centre in Alor Gajah district,” Kamarulsyah said in an official statement today.

As water levels continued to rise, emergency response teams extended operations into the Melaka Tengah district, opening two additional shelters later in the afternoon. The PPS at Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC) Bertambah Ulu was activated at 3:10 PM, followed shortly by the opening of the Japerun Pantai Kundor centre at 3:27 PM.

According to the APM, rescue operations and the relocation of affected residents to both newly established centres were still actively underway as of 4:00 PM today.
