Langkawi Must Forge Its Own Distinct Identity – Sultan of Kedah

Langkawi development identity

ALOR SETAR, July 5 — The development of Langkawi Island should be defined by its own unique identity and character, rather than attempting to copy or draw comparisons with other global tourist destinations such as Phuket in Thailand or Bali in Indonesia, the Sultan of Kedah, Al Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah, has urged.

Speaking at the investiture ceremony of state honours and medals held in conjunction with his 84th birthday at Istana Anak Bukit today, His Royal Highness described Langkawi Island as a strategic asset to both Kedah and the nation, serving as a premier tourist destination and a core driver of the state’s economic expansion.

The Ruler stressed that the archipelago’s true potential remains rooted in its pristine environment and cultural background rather than artificial assimilation.

“Langkawi’s true strength lies in its natural treasures and unique heritage. Therefore, these valuable assets must be preserved and developed sustainably,” His Royal Highness said.

In safeguarding the island’s socioeconomic status, Sultan Sallehuddin issued a stern warning against any quarters trying to degrade the island’s status. He emphasized that he would not compromise with any party seeking to exploit situations by taking actions or making statements that could tarnish Langkawi Island’s international image and pristine reputation.

Beyond the scope of tourism, the Sultan of Kedah also expressed serious concern over ongoing delays in the execution of several strategic infrastructure projects across the state. He specifically highlighted the Sungai Kedah/Anak Bukit flood mitigation plan (RTB), pointing out that the critical public works project has remained incomplete for a considerable period.

His Royal Highness noted that these administrative and operational delays have resulted in recurring floods that continue to disrupt and affect residents in the impacted areas. To alleviate public hardship, he called for immediate, decisive action to ensure that the people are no longer burdened by the recurring infrastructure problem.

The royal state ceremony was also attended by the Sultanah of Kedah, Sultanah Maliha Tengku Ariff; Raja Muda of Kedah Tengku Sarafudin Badlishah Sultan Sallehuddin; Raja Puan Muda of Kedah Che Puan Muda Zaheeda Mohamad Ariff; Tunku Mahkota of Kedah Tunku Shazuddin Ariff Sultan Sallehuddin and Tunku Puan Mahkota of Kedah Che Puan Nur Julie Ariff.
