16th Melaka State Election: EC To Hold Special Meeting Tomorrow

16th Melaka state election EC meeting

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 6 – The Election Commission (EC) will hold a special meeting tomorrow to determine key dates and operational details for the 16th Melaka State Election.

The meeting will be chaired by EC Chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun at the EC Headquarters in Putrajaya.

This special session follows the official dissolution of the 15th Melaka State Legislative Assembly, which took effect on September 23.

Important Dates and Operational Preparations

Tomorrow’s meeting is expected to finalize key timelines and technical arrangements in accordance with election laws:

  • Key Timelines: Setting the dates for the issuance of the election writ, candidate nomination day, campaigning period, and polling day.
  • Electoral Roll: Reviewing the updated electoral roll, including the expanded youth voter demographic following the implementation of automatic voter registration.
  • Logistical Management: Finalizing operational plans for nomination centers, polling stations, and appointing election officers to ensure a smooth voting process.

Decisions made by the EC tomorrow will allow political parties and potential candidates to begin strategizing and preparing their campaign logistics. A formal press conference will take place immediately after the meeting concludes.

Background of State Assembly Dissolution

Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh previously announced the dissolution of the 15th Melaka State Legislative Assembly effective September 23, following consent from Melaka Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Mohd Ali Rustam, to pave the way for the 16th state election.

The Melaka State Legislative Assembly comprises 28 seats. In the 15th Melaka State Election held on November 20, 2021, Barisan Nasional (BN) won 21 seats, Pakatan Harapan (PH) secured five seats, and Perikatan Nasional (PN) obtained two seats.

The upcoming Melaka state poll follows two other state elections completed earlier this year—the Johor State Election on July 11 and the Negeri Sembilan State Election on August 1.
