Voting is Underway in 16th Negeri Sembilan State Election as Over 850,000 Head to Polls

SEREMBAN, Aug 1 — Voting is underway across Negeri Sembilan today as 859,760 registered voters, including 7,391 postal voters, cast their ballots in the 16th State Election (PRN) to elect their new state representatives.

The polling follows an intense 14-day official campaign period that officially concluded at midnight last night.

Polling centers opened simultaneously at 8:00 am across 401 locations statewide involving 1,668 voting streams, and will remain open until 6:00 pm.

The Election Commission (EC) is targeting an overall voter turnout rate of between 72 and 75 percent. Initial election results are expected as early as 10:00 pm, with full official results anticipated prior to midnight.

Today’s ordinary polling follows early voting held last Tuesday, which recorded a 91.06 percent turnout rate as 14,995 military and police personnel alongside their spouses exercised their franchise.

According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), clear weather is forecasted across all districts—including Seremban, Jempol, Jelebu, Kuala Pilah, Tampin, Port Dickson, and Rembau—from morning through noon. However, heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected across most areas in the afternoon.

A total of 103 candidates are contesting across all 36 State Legislative Assembly (DUN) seats.

Pakatan Harapan (PH) dominates the contest with 36 candidates, followed by Barisan Nasional (BN) with 25, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) with 24, and Perikatan Nasional (PN) with 11.

Other participating parties include Berjasa, Parti Orang Asli Malaysia (ASLI), and Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM), each fielding one representative, alongside four Independent candidates.

In terms of electoral battles, 22 state seats face three-cornered fights, 11 seats feature straight fights, while two seats each witness four-cornered and five-cornered contests.

Following the official dissolution of the Negeri Sembilan State Legislative Assembly on June 5, this election determines the state’s government mandate. In the previous 15th state election held in 2023, PH secured 17 seats, BN won 14, and PN captured five.
