UMNO to Form Negotiation Committee for GE16 Alliances, Reaffirms Support for Unity Government

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 12 – UMNO will form a dedicated Negotiation Committee to chart the party’s strategic direction and political alliances ahead of the 16th General Election (GE16), announced UMNO secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki. Speaking at a press conference at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, Asyraf Wajdi stated that the party’s top leadership will establish the committee after evaluating the resolutions and sentiments expressed by delegates during the 2026 UMNO General Assembly. He noted, “Of course, the leadership will take into account the views expressed at this general assembly when deciding on the next steps,”.

Addressing UMNO’s standing within the current federal administration, Asyraf Wajdi reiterated that the party remains fully committed to honoring the Agreement on the Formation of the Malaysian Unity Government. He emphasized that UMNO’s main priority is maintaining national political stability throughout the remainder of the government’s mandate. Reassuring the public against premature political maneuvers, he stated, “The reason is that we still adhere to the agreement on the formation of the Malaysian Unity Government. As long as the time for the election has not arrived, essentially, we will not resort to ‘any backdoor tactics’ or change the government.”

Asyraf Wajdi highlighted that the coalition’s strength relies on upholding the spirit of consensus established in the original governing agreement. “We are thinking about the political stability that we are committed to defending, and that is why I believe no major problems will arise. Most importantly, let the people decide and give their mandate when the time comes,” he added, reinforcing that mutual respect among component parties must be preserved for the benefit of the nation.
