Trump Confirms USS Abraham Lincoln Aircraft Carrier Replacement in West Asia After Record 266-Day Deployment

WASHINGTON, Aug 15 — US President Donald Trump confirmed on Friday that the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier is set to be replaced in West Asia, following growing concerns over the prolonged deployment conditions endured by American service members stationed aboard the vessel.

Addressing reporters regarding family concerns over the extended deployment, Trump revealed that the warship will be relieved by another aircraft carrier in short order.

“That ship is moving right now, or very shortly, and it’s being replaced with another very similar ship,” Trump told reporters.

However, when asked whether the carrier’s deployment had stretched on for too long, the US President dismissed the notion, responding: “No. Not nearly long enough.”

The United States plans to deploy the USS George Washington to relieve the Lincoln as part of a previously scheduled naval rotation, following initial reports by The Wall Street Journal.

The USS Abraham Lincoln originally launched its deployment in November before being redirected to West Asia in January ahead of military operations against Iran. Over the course of its mission, the carrier spent more than 250 days at sea, going without a port call for over 200 consecutive days.

The replacement order follows mounting scrutiny after US Senator Richard Blumenthal issued a formal letter to Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao. The senator highlighted alarming reports from service members, citing critical supply shortages, drinking water contamination, severe plumbing breakdowns, deck safety hazards, deteriorating mental health, and months-long mail disruptions affecting care packages.

In an official statement issued Friday, Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao confirmed the carrier’s upcoming departure and defended the Navy’s operational leadership.

“The USS Abraham Lincoln crushed their deployment and will return home soon as part of a planned rotation. Details will come but let me be clear: the safety and security of our Sailors and Marines always comes first,” Cao stated.

“Mission accomplishment. Troop Welfare. This is how we lead,” he added, explaining that the carrier’s extended operational timeframe was mandated by mission requirements in the region.

“Deployments are hard. Combat operations make them harder. War is hell and normal routines are disrupted. One of the hardest aspects about warfighting beyond knowingly placing our service members in harm’s way is that even with the best planning and communication, change and uncertainty will always be in play. Our success depends on how we adapt,” Cao elaborated.

According to official figures released by Cao, the USS Abraham Lincoln logged 266 total days deployed, including 200 days stationed directly within an active combat zone. Aircraft operating from the carrier completed over 10,000 operational sorties and delivered more than 1.5 million pounds of ordnance during the mission.

Addressing health concerns aboard the vessel, Cao acknowledged that a small number of sailors and Marines received mental health treatment during the extended tour, confirming that no fatalities occurred in connection with those medical cases.
