KOTA KINABALU, Aug 1 — The spirit of patriotism must be translated into tangible efforts to free citizens from poverty and division, rather than merely commemorating the end of colonial rule, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said today.
Hajiji emphasized that national independence is a precious legacy that must be actively safeguarded through unity, mutual cooperation, and a collective commitment to state development.
His speech was delivered by Deputy Chief Minister II and State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun during the launch of Sabah’s National Month and the Fly the Jalur Gemilang campaign at Menara Kinabalu today.
“Let us truly appreciate the meaning of independence. Independence is not merely freedom from colonial rule, but also freedom from the shackles of poverty and division. Independence is a gift that we must cherish and defend,” Hajiji said.
Hajiji stressed that the launch of National Month and the Fly the Jalur Gemilang campaign should not be treated as a routine annual ceremony, but rather embraced as a catalyst to reinforce patriotic resolve across all levels of society.
He called on all Sabahans to display the Jalur Gemilang across the state as an expression of national pride and solidarity.
“May all the people continue to stand united, work together and support one another for a brighter future for Sabah. Let this year’s celebration mark a renewed commitment to building a more developed, progressive and prosperous Sabah,” he added.
Moving forward, Hajiji reaffirmed that the state administration will press ahead with its economic development strategy under the “Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya” (SMJ) 2.0 roadmap to foster a resilient and competitive regional economy.
The policy framework prioritizes sustainable economic growth, human capital development, productivity, technological adoption, and inclusive growth.
The Chief Minister added that state initiatives will focus on high-impact sectors directly benefiting the public, including education, welfare, housing, healthcare, rural development, youth and women empowerment, alongside upgrading basic infrastructure and public utilities statewide.
