PASIR MAS, Aug 23 — Loud booming sounds originating from the direction of Narathiwat, southern Thailand, caused houses in border villages here to shake on Saturday night, sparking concern among local residents.
Residents in Kampung Lubok Gong and Kampung Tersang reported hearing the thunderous noises accompanied by visible flashes of light in the sky late Saturday evening.
Ismail Abdul Rahman, 50, from Kampung Lubok Gong, said the sudden loud noises prompted his family to check outside before deciding to remain indoors for safety.
“They were very loud, like booms in the sky during a lightning storm. The house felt as though it was shaking, and we immediately stayed alert,” Ismail recalled.
Malik Zulkarnain, 35, from Kampung Tersang, noted that the sounds were noticeably distinct from ordinary thunder and clearly echoed from across the border.
“It was clearly audible from across the border. We did not know what was happening, so we chose to stay inside the house,” Malik said.
Despite the initial alarm, Malik confirmed that no unusual incidents occurred around Kampung Tersang by Sunday morning, with villagers resuming their daily routines as normal.
Checks at the Rantau Panjang Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex showed that cross-border operations and public activities were proceeding smoothly and remained fully under control. Overall conditions along the border remained calm without any reported disruptions.
Due to the close geographical proximity of Kampung Lubok Gong and Kampung Tersang to the Malaysia-Thailand border, loud blasts or security incidents occurring in the neighbouring country can easily be heard by local communities.
According to Thai media reports, the southern provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani, and Yala were rocked by a coordinated wave of bomb explosions and simultaneous attacks across more than 51 locations starting at approximately 8:15 pm on Saturday. The incidents caused property damage and fires, prompting Thai security authorities to enforce curfew orders in the affected areas.
