Taiwan Agrees To Purchase 30 Percent Of Alaska Pipeline LNG Output For 20 Years, Says Trump

Trump Taiwan Alaska pipeline LNG deal

WASHINGTON, Oct 14 – US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, that Taiwan has agreed to purchase 30 per cent of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) output produced by a planned pipeline project in Alaska over the next two decades.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Wasilla, Alaska, Trump described the 20-year commitment as a landmark deal that guarantees the commercial viability of the infrastructure development.

Appearing alongside Trump at the rally, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick stated that Taiwan has committed to investing $4.4 billion directly into the construction and development of the pipeline system.

The pipeline project aims to transport natural gas from production fields in Alaska’s remote North Slope down to the state’s southern coast, where it will be processed and exported as LNG to major foreign buyers across the Pacific Ocean.

Direct Equity Investment, Strategic Energy Security, and Pacific Shipping Routes

The long-term agreement aligns with Taiwan’s broader energy diversification strategy and trade balance targets with Washington:

  • State Energy Agreement: Trump’s announcement follows preliminary arrangements where Taiwan’s state-owned energy enterprise, CPC Corp., reached an agreement with the Alaska Gasline Development Corp (AGDC) to procure LNG and acquire an equity stake in the pipeline venture.
  • Financial Commitment: Under the agreed terms, CPC Corp. will invest up to $4.4 billion into the development framework, subject to final corporate and legislative approvals.
  • Direct Transpacific Supply Route: Transporting Alaskan LNG across the Pacific Ocean offers a direct shipping route requiring approximately seven to nine days, enabling Taiwan to avoid sensitive maritime chokepoints and reduce exposure to geopolitical supply risks.
  • Trade Surplus Reduction: The multi-billion dollar commitment supports Taiwan’s efforts to increase energy imports from the United States, helping narrow its growing bilateral trade surplus with Washington.
  • Project Capacity & First Delivery Targets: The Alaska LNG project aims to export up to 20 million metric tons of LNG annually. If technical assessments and construction timelines remain on schedule, initial shipments bound for Taiwan are expected to commence as early as 2032.

The agreement marks a major milestone for the long-delayed $54 billion Alaska LNG pipeline initiative, which has sought long-term off-take partners across East Asia.
