Selangor Declares Sept 1 Special Holiday to Celebrate 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) Victory

SHAH ALAM, Aug 24 — The Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari has declared Sept 1, 2026, as a special public holiday to commemorate the state contingent’s overall victory at the 2026 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) held in Selangor.

Amirudin announced the holiday at the Games’ closing ceremony at Aneka Walk, SA Sentral today, describing it as a gesture of appreciation to the entire contingent and volunteers for bringing honour to the state.

“For the Selangor athletes, our children representing the Red and Yellow team, after 468 sporting events were contested, you successfully won 101 gold, 73 silver and 71 bronze medals,” Amirudin said.

“As the Selangor Menteri Besar, I am delighted with this remarkable performance. As a token of appreciation to every athlete and the 10,000 volunteers who contributed throughout the Games, I am pleased to announce that the Selangor state government has declared a special holiday to celebrate the SUKMA 2026 victory, which will fall on Sept 1, 2026, next Tuesday,” he added.

The closing ceremony was attended by the Raja Muda of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Youth and Sports Minister Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari, and 22nd SUKMA and Para SUKMA Organising Committee Chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi, who also serves as Selangor Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurship Committee Chairman.

Amirudin noted that the state’s achievement reflected the commitment and hard work of athletes, coaches, and contingent officials in meeting Selangor’s objectives.

“To everyone who has been with us since day one, I thank you for placing your trust in Selangor as the host of the 22nd SUKMA and Para SUKMA Games 2026. To the coaches and contingent heads, congratulations on your efforts to nurture talent and identify new athletes,” he stated.

With a final haul of 101 gold, 73 silver, and 71 bronze medals, Selangor surpassed its initial target of 80 gold medals and recorded its best-ever performance, eclipsing its previous record set when hosting the Games 28 years ago.

The victory marks Selangor’s 10th overall SUKMA title, following previous general championship wins in 1988, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2013, and 2016.
