Proposed ECRL Extension and China’s Pinglu Canal to Enhance Regional Land-Sea Connectivity

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 29 – The proposed extension of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) to Rantau Panjang, Kelantan, is set to create strategic opportunities for Malaysia to strengthen regional transport networks, particularly following the opening of China’s Pinglu Canal.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook stated that the rail extension—announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim following his working visit to China—will extend the current line from Kota Bharu to the Thai border at Rantau Panjang.

The project aligns with the opening of China’s Pinglu Canal on September 16, 2026. The 134.2-kilometre canal in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region links the Xijiang River system to the Beibu Gulf, accommodating ships up to 5,000 tonnes and providing southwestern China with a direct maritime route to ASEAN markets.

Speaking at a press conference after officiating Malaysia Maritime Week 2026 (MMW2026) on Tuesday, Loke highlighted the synergy between regional port partnerships and expanded rail infrastructure.

“This will continue to strengthen our collaboration between ports. So, we are also looking forward to having stronger collaboration, especially between Kuantan Port and Guangxi. This is another very important project because it will link Malaysia with Thailand’s rail network on the east coast side,” Loke said.

He noted that linking the Thai rail system to the ECRL border entry will solidify a broader Pan-Asian transport corridor.

“So from Malaysia (to) Thailand, Laos, China, Central Asia, I mean the entire region will be linked up. But it’s not just exclusively about rail. Rail must be connected to ports. So it’s a land-sea corridor which is very, very important in China, and we are looking at how to integrate our port sector with the rail sector,” he added.

Loke emphasized that the integrated transportation network will yield strategic, economic, and supply chain security benefits across the region.
