MALÉ, Sept 15 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will hold a bilateral meeting with Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu today, marking the central event of his two-day official visit to the island nation.

Anwar is scheduled to commence his official program at the President’s Office at 9:00 am local time, attending an Official Welcoming Ceremony at Republic Square before holding a one-on-one meeting with President Muizzu.

Both leaders are expected to discuss strategies to strengthen bilateral relations across trade, investment, and tourism, while exchanging views on regional and international issues of mutual concern.

Following their private session, Anwar and Muizzu will lead a delegation-level meeting to explore new avenues of cooperation. The two leaders are also scheduled to witness the exchange of memorandums of understanding (MoUs) in the areas of defence and Islamic affairs before addressing a joint press conference.

In 2025, the Maldives stood as Malaysia’s sixth-largest trading partner in South Asia, with total bilateral trade valued at RM792 million, including RM786.2 million in Malaysian exports.

In the afternoon, the Prime Minister will hold separate courtesy calls with the Vice President of the Maldives, the Speaker of the People’s Majlis, and the country’s Foreign Minister at Niva Kurumba.

Anwar will also address a press conference with the Malaysian media before attending an official luncheon hosted by President Muizzu. He is scheduled to depart for Malaysia from Velana International Airport on Wednesday afternoon, concluding the visit, which builds on diplomatic relations first established between the two nations in 1968.
