KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 18 – Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) has officially restructured its state leadership in Sarawak, appointing former state party secretary Mahmud Epah as the new Sarawak State Leadership Council Chairman ahead of upcoming state elections.
PKR Secretary-General Datuk Dr Fuziah Salleh confirmed the major leadership overhaul in an official statement released on Sunday, October 18, 2026.
The strategic decision was finalized during a high-level consultation meeting involving Sarawak PKR division leaders and PKR President Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim held on Saturday.
Mahmud replaces outgoing state chief Ahmad Nazib Johari, who will now transition into a broader national role focused on reinforcing organizational ties between federal party headquarters and East Malaysian leadership structures.
“The meeting agreed to restructure the state leadership, with Mahmud Epah named as the new Sarawak State Leadership Council chairman,” Dr Fuziah stated, emphasizing that the realignment forms a crucial component of the party’s regional expansion strategy.
Election Preparation, Strategic Reconfiguration, and East Malaysia Expansion
The organizational shift comes as political parties across Sarawak prepare for the impending 13th Sarawak State Election:
- State Poll Readiness: The leadership consultation agreed on several core strategic measures designed to bolster PKR’s election machinery, campaign infrastructure, and ground readiness across Sarawak’s constituencies.
- Focus On Election Strategy: Party leadership emphasized that immediate priorities will centre on fine-tuning electoral strategies, voter outreach programs, and comprehensive grassroots preparations.
- New Role For Ex-Chairman: Outgoing chairman Ahmad Nazib Johari will lead efforts to deepen political networks and bridge communications between central leadership and state branches in Sabah and Sarawak.
- Internal Leadership Consensus: The restructuring was unanimously endorsed by Sarawak division chiefs during their direct engagement session with Party President Anwar Ibrahim.
The fresh leadership team under Mahmud Epah is expected to convene its first formal state council meeting in Kuching to finalize division-level strategy and candidate selection frameworks.
