Over 8 Million Domestic Users to Benefit From Raised Electricity Bill Protection Threshold, Says TNB

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 18 — More than eight million domestic electricity users, representing up to 90 per cent of Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) residential customers, are set to benefit from the government’s decision to raise the electricity bill protection threshold from 600 to 800 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per month.

TNB President and Chief Executive Officer Datuk Shamsul Ahmad stated that the higher ceiling will extend financial relief to nearly one million additional domestic accounts, helping ease cost-of-living pressures as hotter weather and haze drive up household energy usage across the country.

Under the expanded scheme, domestic users consuming up to 800 kWh monthly will be exempted from the Automatic Fuel Adjustment (AFA), the eight per cent Sales and Service Tax (SST), and the RM10 monthly retail charge. The additional protection applies to electricity consumption from September through Dec 31, 2026, with the reduction for September to be credited directly into consumers’ October billing statements.

“As a national utility company, TNB’s priority is to ensure that the people continue to enjoy safe and reliable electricity supply during these challenging times,” Shamsul told a media conference today.

Shamsul noted that the expanded relief will shield consumers from fluctuations in the AFA rate, which is sensitive to volatile global fuel costs fueled by geopolitical tensions in West Asia. To support the government initiative, TNB expects to bear a financial impact ranging between RM120 million and RM150 million to cover the AFA and retail charge exemptions throughout the four-month period.

He added that TNB will continue playing a proactive role in helping consumers manage energy consumption efficiently through technology, information access, and suitable usage options. Despite the enhanced protection, the utility company urged consumers to remain mindful of energy conservation, encouraging households to track their daily usage via the myTNB mobile application.
