ATLANTA, Oct 31 – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated that there has been no tangible progress or easing of diplomatic tensions between Russia and the United States, despite attending the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Atlanta.
Speaking on Friday, October 30, 2026, Lavrov dismissed suggestions that a recent temporary agreement allowing US purchases of Russian diesel fuel signaled broader diplomatic reconciliation.
“In practice, no real progress in relations with the US has so far been seen,” Lavrov said, cautioning against illusions surrounding the diesel arrangement.
Lavrov criticized Washington for maintaining sanctions initiated under the previous administration while imposing new restrictions targeting Russian energy major state entities, including Lukoil and Rosneft.
Addressing upcoming trilateral peace talks involving Ukraine, the United States, and Russia, Lavrov indicated that delegations intend to convene in mid-November in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, to resume negotiations on a potential peace framework.
The Russian diplomat also condemned German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul after G20 organizers canceled the official joint photo following objections from European representatives.
Dismissing Wadephul’s stance as “family photo diplomacy,” Lavrov argued that focusing on photo appearances reflects superficial priorities rather than constructive engagement.
