ISTANBUL, Oct 17 – Morocco marked a major political milestone on Friday as King Mohammed VI appointed Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri as the nation’s first female prime minister, presiding over the official swearing-in ceremony of her 32-member cabinet at the Royal Palace in Rabat.
El Mansouri, a senior leader of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), takes office at the head of a broad four-party majority coalition following weeks of political consultations after her party secured 97 seats to win the country’s September 23 legislative elections.
The historic government succeeds the administration of former Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch and elevates seven women into cabinet positions, up from six in the previous executive.
“The new administration reflects a commitment to administrative modernization while ensuring stability across critical national portfolios,” stated official reports from state news agency Maghreb Arabe Presse (MAP).
Four-Party Majority Alliance, Key Ministry Continuity, and AI Portfolio
The political structure and strategic priorities of Morocco’s incoming administration feature several key structural developments:
- Coalition Composition: The governing majority brings together four political parties—the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), the Istiqlal Party, the Socialist Union of Popular Forces, and the Party of Progress and Socialism—following the conclusion of coalition negotiations that commenced on September 30.
- Continuity in Strategic Posts: King Mohammed VI retained several key cabinet members in their existing roles, including Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit, Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi, and Islamic Affairs and Endowments Minister Ahmed Toufiq.
- Dedicated AI and Digital Ministry: Reflecting a push toward modernization, the new cabinet formally created the Ministry of Artificial Intelligence, Digital Transformation, and Administrative Reform, placing it under the leadership of Ahmed Rahhou.
- Path to Appointment: King Mohammed VI originally charged El Mansouri with forming a government on September 29 after PAM emerged as the largest party in Parliament, leading to a joint coalition announcement on Monday following final accord agreements.
El Mansouri’s government is expected to prioritize economic revitalization, administrative digitisation, and social welfare programs across the Kingdom.
