TOKYO, Oct 8 – A preliminary magnitude-4.8 earthquake struck eastern Japan early Thursday morning, with noticeable shaking recorded across Chiba Prefecture and neighboring areas.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the tremor occurred at 4:13 AM on October 8, 2026, originating in the northeastern part of Chiba Prefecture at an estimated depth of 50 kilometres.

The quake registered an intensity of 4 on the Japanese seismic scale (shindo) in the city of Asahi, while lighter tremors were reported across adjacent prefectures, including Ibaraki.

Consecutive Tremors and Tsunami Status

A secondary, lower-intensity earthquake occurred shortly after the initial tremor in the same region:

  • Follow-up Tremor: Approximately three hours after the first quake, a magnitude-4.0 earthquake jolted Ibaraki Prefecture, registering a seismic intensity of 3 in Hitachiomiya.
  • Tsunami Risk: The JMA confirmed that neither earthquake triggered a tsunami warning or threat along Japan’s eastern coastline.
  • Impact and Damage: No immediate reports of major structural damage, casualties, or severe infrastructure disruptions were reported following the two early morning quakes.

Local authorities and disaster management agencies continue to monitor the region for potential aftershocks.
