KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 26 — Malaysia and Turkiye have reinforced bilateral defence ties following the hosting of the inaugural Malaysia-Turkiye Policy Talk at Turkiye’s Ministry of National Defence (MoND) headquarters in Ankara on Monday.
According to a statement from Malaysia’s Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) today, the meeting was co-chaired by MoND Director-General of Defence and Security Lt Gen Ilkay Altindag and MINDEF Deputy Secretary-General (Policy) Datuk Yani Daud.
The talks focused on several key areas of strategic interest, including:
- Defence policy and strategic security
- Geopolitical security developments
- Information sharing and perspective exchange
- Strengthening defence cooperation networks to maintain regional peace and stability
“Malaysia also expressed its appreciation for Turkiye’s important role in maintaining peace in West Asia through the recent signing of the Makkah Pact,” MINDEF said.
During the session, both nations agreed to establish Terms of Reference (TOR) for the Policy Talk framework, providing a formal mechanism to explore future defence programmes and cooperation instruments.
Following the meeting in Ankara, Malaysia formally invited Turkiye to attend the second Policy Talk in Kuala Lumpur next year. MINDEF added that the upcoming session is expected to further solidify the strategic partnership in alignment with priorities outlined in the Mid-Term Review of the Defence White Paper.
