Malaysia, Thailand Agree On Mechanism To Streamline Flood Aid Distribution

Malaysia Thailand flood aid distribution Songkhla

SONGKHLA, Oct 4 – The Consulate General of Malaysia in Songkhla and Thai authorities have established a joint mechanism to streamline the distribution of flood relief supplies to disaster-stricken residents.

Malaysia’s Consul General in Songkhla, Ahmad Fahmi Ahmad Sarkawi, confirmed that the arrangement forms part of proactive measures to prepare for potential severe flooding in southern Thailand, similar to the major inundation that struck Hat Yai in late November last year.

Speaking during a delegation visit by the Perlis Journalists Association (PWP) to the Malaysian Consulate General on Friday, October 2, 2026, Ahmad Fahmi explained that designated storage warehouses have been identified through discussions with the Songkhla Governor’s Office to guarantee coordinated supply chains.

“When supplies from Malaysia arrive, we will immediately send them to the warehouses, and we have also agreed with the Governor’s Office that the Thai authorities will distribute the supplies to those in need,” Ahmad Fahmi stated.

Lessons Learned and Reciprocal Relief Arrangements

Ahmad Fahmi noted that the updated framework addresses key logistical bottlenecks encountered during previous relief missions in Hat Yai, where incoming Malaysian aid accumulated without clear storage locations or designated handling personnel.

Key features of the updated cross-border disaster relief coordination include:

  • NGO Participation Guidance: If Thai authorities experience manpower shortages, Malaysian non-governmental organizations (NGOs) will be permitted to conduct direct aid distribution under the operational guidance and supervision of local Thai agencies.
  • Reciprocal Aid Channels: The Malaysian consulate is coordinating with agencies in Malaysia to facilitate reciprocal aid flows from Thailand to northern Malaysian states should major flooding occur across the border.
  • Travel Warnings and Advisory: With roughly 7,000 Malaysians rescued during last year’s severe floods in southern Thailand, the consulate advised travelers planning visits between October 2026 and January 2027 to closely monitor local weather updates. Travelers are urged to postpone trips if river monitoring stations along the Golok River or Hat Yai waterways reach critical danger thresholds.

The consulate confirmed it will issue frequent weather warnings via its official portal and social media channels on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) based on official Thai meteorological alerts.
