Maintenance Worker Drowns After Suspected Fall Into Five-Metre Water Tank at Kuala Langat Power Plant

SHAH ALAM, Aug 10 — A 34-year-old contract worker has drowned after reportedly falling into a five-metre-deep water tank while conducting scheduled maintenance at the Kuala Langat Power Plant cooling tower yesterday evening.

The body of the local man was recovered at approximately 4:00 am today following an intensive search operation across two separate pools located within the facility grounds.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Assistant Director (Operations) Ashrul Riezal Asbar confirmed that the department received an emergency distress call regarding the incident at 7:29 pm yesterday, prompting the immediate dispatch of search-and-rescue teams to the power plant.

Explaining the events leading up to the tragic incident, Ashrul Riezal stated that the victim was replacing timber structures at the cooling tower alongside a coworker prior to his disappearance.

“The victim was carrying out maintenance work with a colleague to replace wood at the cooling tower before his colleague left to get more wood. When the colleague returned to the location 15 minutes later, he found that the victim was no longer there,” Ashrul Riezal said in an official statement.

“Initially, the colleague thought the victim might have gone to the washroom, but became suspicious that he may have fallen after he failed to return. The colleague then informed the supervisor, who conducted a roll call and found that the victim was missing,” he added.

Following the confirmation of the worker’s absence, emergency responders initiated a multi-station search effort involving personnel from the Banting, Port Klang, and KLIA Fire and Rescue Stations (BBP).

The joint search and retrieval operation officially concluded at 5:05 am today, and the case has been formally handed over to the Royal Malaysia Police for further investigation and legal processing.
