PUTRAJAYA, Oct 1 – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has confirmed that it has not yet received an official report regarding allegations of RM2.1 billion in excess spending by the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW).
MACC Chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Abd Halim Aman stated that the agency is currently aware of the matter only through news coverage and will step in once a formal complaint is lodged.
“We have only read about it in the mass media. There is nothing official yet. Therefore, I do not think it is appropriate for me to comment,” Abd Halim said during a press conference following the MACC’s 59th Anniversary Celebration and Monthly Assembly in Putrajaya on Thursday. “Once the matter is officially reported to us, we will certainly step in (to investigate).”
Background of the Allegations
The Chief Commissioner’s comments follow calls by DAP advisor Lim Guan Eng urging MACC to initiate an inquiry into the ministry over the alleged RM2.1 billion expenditure discrepancy.
In response to the allegations, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who also serves as Rural and Regional Development Minister, denied any financial impropriety. Ahmad Zahid clarified that KKDW operates strictly within government-approved allocations and spends in accordance with parameters set out in the national budget.
