GENEVA, Oct 16 – An international law enforcement operation coordinated by the International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol) resulted in the arrest of 95 suspects across Latin America and Europe involved in the production and distribution of child sexual abuse material.
The law enforcement crackdown, conducted between March and September 2026, involved police agencies across 17 countries—including Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, Spain, and Italy—executing 127 search warrants.
Stephen Fry, Interpol’s Executive Director for Investigative Support, highlighted the severity of the crimes and the ongoing digital threat.
“Behind every file is a child who was abused, and who is revictimised every time that image recirculates,” Fry stated. “Wherever offenders move, we have to move faster.”
Rescue Operations, Group Takedowns, and Cyber-Sextortion Cases
The multinational operation yielded significant breakthroughs and rescued young victims from ongoing abuse:
- Child Rescue in Colombia: Law enforcement officers in Colombia rescued a five-year-old child and arrested a parent accused of producing and monetizing sexual abuse material involving the victim. Using Interpol’s specialized image database, forensic analysts traced abuse files back to when the child was one year old.
- Massive Digital Seizures in Ecuador: Ecuadorian investigators seized over 4,000 digital files containing approximately 15 gigabytes of child abuse material from a suspect linked to online distribution groups.
- Network Administrator Arrested in Panama: Panamanian police apprehended the primary administrator of an online chat network comprising over 700 registered users utilized to circulate illegal content.
- Sextortion Network Dismantled in Argentina: Argentine authorities arrested a suspect who targeted more than 260 young girls across multiple countries through online grooming and extortion, threatening victims into producing explicit content.
Interpol warned that criminal syndicates are increasingly utilizing encrypted messaging software and decentralized platforms to coordinate live exploitation, monetize abuse networks, and evade national borders.
