KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 26 — Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob will be charged at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court tomorrow under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009.

His lawyer, Datuk Amer Hamzah Arshad, confirmed that the 66-year-old Bera Member of Parliament will appear in court for the case mention before Judge Suzana Hussin at 9:00 am.

Ismail Sabri is expected to face charges under Section 36(2) of the MACC Act 2009 relating to the declaration of assets.

The former prime minister was originally scheduled to be charged on Aug 7, but the court proceedings were adjourned to Aug 27 after he was admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) due to health issues.

Amer Hamzah stated that his client experienced a heart problem while having his statement recorded by anti-graft officers on Aug 6, leading to a diagnosis of possible arrhythmia and a scheduled pacemaker procedure. The former prime minister had previously been summoned several times by MACC to have his statement recorded concerning asset declarations.

As part of an ongoing investigation into alleged corruption and money laundering involving the former prime minister, MACC seized RM170 million in cash in various foreign currencies and confiscated 16 kilogrammes of pure gold bars, estimated to be worth RM7 million.

The seizures were carried out during searches of a residence and an office allegedly used as safe houses, following investigations into four of Ismail Sabri’s senior officers who were detained in February last year.
