KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 24 — Former national men’s hockey team head coach and legendary player Sarjit Singh passed away on Sunday night at the age of 63.
Sarjit died at Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in Cheras at 10:00 pm.
The Malaysian Hockey Confederation (MHC) confirmed his passing in an official statement on its Facebook page, expressing profound grief over his demise.
“His dedication, service, and contributions to Malaysian hockey – both as a player and as a head coach – will always be remembered. Our heartfelt condolences go to his family and loved ones. May they find strength, comfort, and peace during this difficult time. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” the MHC stated.
Sarjit enjoyed a distinguished career in Malaysian hockey, representing the country as a player from 1982 until 1993. During his playing tenure, he captained the national side at the 1982 Junior World Cup in Kuala Lumpur and led the senior squad at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona.
Transitioning to coaching, Sarjit managed the national junior squad from 2004 to 2006. Most recently, he served as head coach of the national senior team, the Speedy Tigers, from March 2024 until last March.
