Flash Floods Impact Selangor Roads, Subang Bridge Collapses Following Continuous Heavy Rain

Selangor flash floods bridge collapse Jalan Kubu Gajah JKR

SUNGAI BULOH, Nov 4 – Continuous heavy rainfall since early Wednesday, November 4, 2026, triggered widespread flash floods across several key districts in Selangor, resulting in structural damage and major traffic diversions after a bridge collapsed in Sungai Subang.

According to the Petaling District Public Works Department (JKR), a bridge along Jalan Kubu Gajah spanning Sungai Subang in the Petaling district collapsed at approximately 2:00 AM.

The collapse occurred after torrential river currents eroded the riverbanks following 48 millimeters of rainfall recorded at the Paya Jaras Hilir monitoring station.

The structural collapse completely severed the primary route connecting Kampung Kubu Gajah and Paya Jaras Hilir, prompting immediate road closures for all motor vehicles to ensure public safety.

To manage traffic congestion, JKR activated a Traffic Management Plan (TMP) with specific detour routes:

  • Toward Merbau Sempak & Kubu Gajah: Motorists are diverted via Jalan Merbau Sempak towards Masjid Nurul Iman.
  • Toward Paya Jaras Hilir: Vehicles can access the area via Jalan Paya Jaras Hilir through Federal Route 54 (FT54).

JKR confirmed that a temporary Bailey bridge will be installed as a medium-term measure to restore physical connectivity between the isolated communities.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Operations Division Assistant Director Ashrul Riezal Asbar reported that flash floods hit multiple residential and commercial zones, including Sungai Buloh, Paya Jaras, Kampung Melayu Subang, Rawang, and several areas in Shah Alam.

On major expressways, floodwaters have begun receding. A Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) Traffic Management Centre spokesman confirmed that the right and middle northbound lanes at the Shah Alam interchange reopened to traffic.

However, southbound lanes at the interchange remain temporarily closed to facilitate debris clearance and safety evaluations before a full reopening. LLM confirmed no other major highways were affected by floodwaters.

Structural Damage, Detour Routes, and Affected Areas

Key infrastructure impacts, traffic diversions, and emergency response updates include:

  • Bridge Collapse Details: Jalan Kubu Gajah bridge over Sungai Subang collapsed at 2:00 AM due to bank erosion caused by 48mm of rainfall at Paya Jaras Hilir station.
  • Traffic Management Plan (TMP): Detours active via Jalan Merbau Sempak towards Masjid Nurul Iman and FT54 via Jalan Paya Jaras Hilir; temporary Bailey bridge installation planned.
  • Affected Residential Zones: Flash flooding reported across Sungai Buloh, Paya Jaras, Kampung Melayu Subang, Rawang, and Shah Alam.
  • Expressway Status: Northbound right/middle lanes at the Shah Alam interchange reopened; southbound lanes remain closed for debris clearing.
