Driver Arrested in Fatal HKL Hit-and-Run

HKL hit-and-run driver arrested

KUALA LUMPUR, July 5— A 30-year-old driver has been detained after turning himself in to the police following a fatal early morning hit-and-run accident on Jalan Tun Razak that claimed the life of a young motorcyclist.

The incident, which occurred near the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) at approximately 6:00 AM today, involved a 29-year-old victim who was riding a Yamaha 135LC motorcycle. According to Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department Chief Assistant Commissioner (ACP) Mohd Zamzuri Mohd Isa, preliminary findings indicate that the motorcycle was struck violently from behind by a passenger car.

“The victim fell onto the road and sustained severe head injuries from the collision. He was pronounced dead at the scene by a Kuala Lumpur Hospital assistant medical officer,” Mohd Zamzuri confirmed in an official statement tonight.

Following the crash, investigators managed to trace the vehicle involved, which was identified as a ‘sambung bayar’ (continue-payment) car that the suspect had been operating at the time of the collision.

At approximately 6:30 PM today, the driver voluntarily surrendered at the Kuala Lumpur Traffic Police Station. He was immediately taken into custody to facilitate investigations under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

Subsequent medical screenings showed no signs of intoxication or substance abuse. Mohd Zamzuri noted that the suspect’s preliminary urine screening and breathalyser tests both returned negative results for drugs and alcohol.

Authorities are currently appealing to eye-witnesses or members of the public with relevant information or dashcam footage to step forward. Individuals who can assist with the ongoing investigation are urged to contact the Tun H.S. Lee Traffic Police Station at 03-2071 9999 or report directly to the nearest police station.
