KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Dr Johari Abdul today confirmed that he officially received a formal resignation notice from Subang Member of Parliament Wong Chen, which took effect yesterday.
Addressing lawmakers during the opening of the Special Dewan Rakyat Sitting here today, Johari stated that he has officially notified the Election Commission (EC) regarding the casual vacancy in the Subang parliamentary constituency in accordance with constitutional requirements.
“As everyone is aware, the Honourable Member for Subang has submitted a letter relinquishing his membership, effective yesterday,” Johari announced inside the chamber.
“As the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat, I have notified the Election Commission of the vacancy of the Subang parliamentary seat in accordance with Article 54(1) of the Federal Constitution,” he told the house.
The Speaker’s confirmation follows Wong’s public announcement on Monday, in which the three-term parliamentarian confirmed via a Facebook post that he had voluntarily relinquished his parliamentary position.
In his social media post, Wong shared a copy of his resignation notice dated August 5 that he had previously submitted to the Speaker, noting that the advance notification was provided to allow parliamentary administrators sufficient time to process the seat vacancy.
