Datuk Ab Ghani Hassan Elected FAM President in Decisive Vote Following Executive Committee Overhaul

PETALING JAYA, Sept 17 — Datuk Ab Ghani Hassan has been elected as the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president for the remainder of the 2025–2029 term after securing a commanding majority at the FAM Executive Committee Election today.

The election, conducted during the Second FAM Extraordinary Congress 2026, saw Ab Ghani obtain 20 votes in a straight fight to defeat Football Association of Selangor (FAS) deputy president Datuk Seri Shahril Mokhtar, who received five votes.

In the vice-presidential contests, Datuk Seri Rosmadi Ismail was elected Vice-President 1 with 15 votes, edging out Mohd Firdaus Mohamed and Syed Yazid Syed Omar, who secured five votes each. Datuk N. Saaran claimed the Vice-President 3 post with 18 votes against challenger Afizal Abu Othman’s seven votes.

The Vice-President 2 position was not contested during the congress and will be filled by the Malaysian Football League (MFL) president in accordance with Article 33 (2) of the FAM Statutes.

In the Executive Committee elections representing state football associations, seats were secured by Mohd Azizudin Mohd Shariff (19 votes), Datuk Mohd Azhar Jamaluddin (19 votes), and Datuk Alijus @ Mohd Ali Sipil (15 votes).

For the two club-representative Exco positions, Datuk Kamarudin Hassan and Datuk Syed Mahadi Syed Hassan were elected after securing 15 votes each. Meanwhile, national football legend Datuk Zainal Abidin Hassan won the professional category Exco seat in a landslide, earning 22 votes over Azlan Johar’s three votes. Datuk Suraya Yaacob was elected to the women’s Exco post with 15 votes.

Today’s election reconstitutes the governing body’s executive leadership after the previous committee resigned en masse in January. The collective step-down followed disciplinary action from FIFA over documentation issues involving seven national team (Harimau Malaya) players
