Governor Gavin Newsom
CALIFORNIA, Sept 30 – The US state of California has officially recognized Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as state holidays following the signing of Assembly Bill 2017 by Governor Gavin Newsom.
The legislation officially incorporates the two major Islamic celebrations into California’s state holiday calendar.
Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the sacred month of fasting, while Eid al-Adha coincides with the annual Hajj pilgrimage.
Under the newly enacted law, public schools and community colleges in California are granted the option to close for both holidays through existing local administrative procedures. Additionally, eligible state employees may receive holiday credit for these dates.
“The designation of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as state holidays is a civil calendar determination that acknowledges their cultural significance to California communities,” the law stated.
