Bursa Malaysia Ends Lower As Higher US Yields, Oil Prices Weigh On Sentiment

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 7 – Bursa Malaysia closed lower on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, aligning with weaker regional market trends and failing to build on Wall Street’s overnight rally as elevated US Treasury yields and rising crude oil prices dampened investor risk appetite.

The benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) shed 21.57 points, or 1.32 per cent, to close at 1,611.78 down from Tuesday’s close of 1,633.35.

The index touched an intraday high of 1,633.54 at the opening bell before experiencing persistent selling pressure, dropping to an intraday low of 1,610.55 during late afternoon trading.

Market Breadth and Trading Volume

Market breadth turned negative at the close, with decliners outpacing gainers 663 to 492, while 508 counters finished unchanged, 1,127 remained untraded, and 13 were suspended.

Total trading volume contracted to 3.83 billion units valued at RM3.52 billion, compared with 4.18 billion units worth RM2.95 billion recorded on Tuesday.

Segmental trading volume details included:

  • Main Market Volume: Slid to 2.40 billion units valued at RM3.15 billion from 2.59 billion units worth RM2.50 billion previously.
  • ACE Market Volume: Shrink to 489.99 million units valued at RM227.12 million from 653.91 million units worth RM276.54 million.
  • Warrants Turnover: Expanded to 939.82 million units valued at RM143.09 million compared to 932.44 million units worth RM171.80 million on Tuesday.

Active Stocks and Index Heavyweights

Heavyweight financial and blue-chip stocks led the market retreat:

  • Heavyweight Decliners: CIMB erased 37 sen to RM7.33, Maybank fell 10 sen to RM9.87, Public Bank slid eight sen to RM4.59, Tenaga Nasional lost four sen to RM12.86, and IHH Healthcare edged down one sen to RM7.90.
  • Active Counters: Top Glove declined two sen to 85.5 sen, Supermax Corporation erased 1.5 sen to 44.5 sen, Zetrix AI shed one sen to eight sen, V.S Industry eased half a sen to 32.5 sen, while Metronic Global traded flat at half a sen.
  • Top Gainers: Technology and industrial counters posted solid gains, with Mi Technovation jumping 38 sen to RM6.38, Batu Kawan advancing 32 sen to RM19.60, Malaysian Pacific Industries rising 24 sen to RM45.20, Petronas Dagangan climbing 20 sen to RM19.32, and Gas Malaysia adding 16 sen to RM5.25.
  • Top Decliners: Consumer and banking stocks led losses, with Nestle plunging RM2.24 to RM89.02, Fraser & Neave dropping 94 sen to RM20.78, Hong Leong Bank shedding 58 sen to RM21.50, and both Hong Leong Financial Group and Allianz Malaysia giving up 44 sen each to RM17.90 and RM20.18, respectively.

Sectoral and Index Performance

On the index board, losses in financial counters heavily dragged down composite metrics:

  • Financial Services Index: Tumbled 504.68 points to 18,563.32.
  • Plantation Index: Dropped 66.13 points to 8,976.04.
  • Energy Index: Shed 1.75 points to 838.97.
  • Industrial Products & Services Index: Edged down 0.53 of a point to 179.88.

The FBM Emas Index dropped 107.92 points to 12,124.95, the FBM Top 100 Index slumped 113.80 points to 11,901.98, the FBM Emas Shariah Index lost 11.83 points to 12,147.15, and the FBM ACE Index slipped 36.54 points to 5,622.38. Conversely, the FBM Mid 70 Index managed to gain 19.38 points, closing at 17,753.49.
