KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 27 – Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has urged the public to remain vigilant and prioritize safety as the 2026/2027 Northeast Monsoon is expected to begin today, Tuesday, October 27, 2026.
In an official Facebook post, Ahmad Zahid cautioned that the monsoon period, projected to persist through March 2027, will bring prolonged heavy rainfall, flash floods, and turbulent maritime conditions that pose severe risks to residents in flood-prone zones.
According to forecasts from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), between three and five major episodes of continuous heavy rainfall are expected to occur nationwide between November 2026 and January 2027.
“This could increase the risk of flooding, particularly in areas near rivers and low-lying areas,” the Deputy Prime Minister highlighted.
He also warned that sustained strong winds during the monsoon phase could generate rough seas and elevated water levels across the South China Sea.
Ahmad Zahid urged citizens to closely track MetMalaysia weather advisories, avoid water-logged routes, and strictly obey relocation orders issued by national disaster response personnel.
