AGC Rejects Representation by Preacher Zamri Vinoth Over Public Alarm Charge, Trial Set for April 2027

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 18 — The Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) has rejected a representation submitted by independent preacher Muhammad Zamri Vinoth Kalimuthu seeking a review of his charge for making a statement likely to cause public alarm.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Farhana Mohamad Poad informed Magistrate Faezahnoor Hassan of the decision during court proceedings today, confirming that the prosecution will proceed to trial.

“Today was fixed for the decision on the representation, and we wish to inform the court that the representation has been rejected,” DPP Nur Farhana told the court.

Following the decision, defence counsel Nur Shafiqah Shafiyah Omar requested that the court establish trial dates. DPP Nur Farhana indicated that the prosecution expects to call between six and seven witnesses to testify.

Magistrate Faezahnoor subsequently fixed April 21 and 22 next year for the trial.

Zamri Vinoth, 42, was charged on March 17 under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code (Act 574) for allegedly making a statement on his Facebook account, “Zamri Vinoth,” at 12:22 pm on Feb 3 that was likely to cause public alarm and incite offences against public order.

The charge relates to a gathering held in front of a shopping complex in the capital. The statement was subsequently seen and heard by a 45-year-old man at a restaurant along Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman.

Under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, an individual convicted of the offence faces an imprisonment term of up to two years, a fine, or both.

Speaking to reporters outside the courtroom, Nur Shafiqah confirmed that the representation had been submitted to the AGC to seek a review of the charge, including exploring options to reduce the charge or pursue an alternative resolution.
