KUALA LUMPUR, April 20 — Maybank Islamic Bhd is contributing food packs to over 5,000 families in 11 countries, in conjunction with the fasting month of Ramadan, to alleviate their burdens wreaked by COVID-19.
The aid would benefit the underprivileged groups in countries where the bank operates, namely Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Brunei, Dubai, and the marginalized community in Myanmar of Rohingya ethnic.
Maybank Islamic chief executive officer Datuk Mohamed Rafique Merican said the program was aligned to the Maybank Group’s mission of humanizing financial services across Asia, besides being part of Maybank Islamic’s initiative to uphold the intended outcomes of shariah.
He said the aid would be distributed to individuals or families, particularly the B40 income group which includes single mothers, people with disabilities, fishermen, farmers, and those who lost their jobs since the start of the Movement Control Order.
““We hope that this contribution will ease the burdens and reduce the cost of daily expenses of those in need, especially with the fasting month,” he said in a statement today.
The Regional Ramadan Relief annual programme is a collaboration with five other non-governmental organisations, namely the Islamic Relief Malaysia, Mercy Malaysia, Islamic Aid Malaysia, Yayasan Pembangunan Ekonomi Islam Malaysia and Yayasan Ikhlas.
Since its inception in 2013, Maybank Islamic has allocated fund over RM14 million for its flagship corporate responsibility (CR) programme that has benefited about 120,000 underprivileged families.
Mohamed Rafique said Maybank Islamic has allocated over RM13 million fund for CR program in 2021, which would be distributed on basis of four pillars, namely education, humanitarian aid, Islamic social finance, and Ihsan (spiritual excellence).
