KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 18 – Free Malaysia Today (FMT) has retracted a report it published earlier today saying that Attorney-General Tommy Thomas has resigned his post.
Having quoted a government source in its original report, the news portal apologized for the false reporting.
FMT stated its source had retracted their confirmation on the rumour that the AG had quit.
Meanwhile, Tommy has since responded to the report, denying he was going to quit just three months after being appointed.
“Absolutely untrue. I will serve my term. These are false and dishonest rumours,” he was quoted as saying by other news portals.
He was appointed AG on June 5, over some controversy over his appointment by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Another interference to sabotage Tommy?
NMT previously reported on August 25 about how former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak still has control over the the Attorney General’s Chambers after Tun Dr Mahathir’s lawyer, Haniff Khatri revealed of interference from within the AGC.
Is this fake-news of Tommy resigning another attempt to undermine the AG? Is this another attack on Tommy? Who was the source? Did it come from his own office? Where else could it come from?
Or is this a sign that even after 4 months, Tommy have yet to gain control of his own chambers?
Thomas told The Malaysian Insight: “That is absolutely inaccurate. I am still the attorney-general. The reporter should have made an attempt to verify whatever information he received.”
This certainly directs questions to FMT for reporting unverified source, however, NMT hope that the AG will investigate the source of the fake news.
The Attorney General must start showing to the public that he is the captain of ship and there is no potential mutiny aboard.
